Who is Sadie Clayton? LCCA’s Head of Industry Engagement joins BBC’s Race Against the Tide

LCCA’s Head of Industry Engagement and Partnerships, Sadie Clayton, is taking on an exciting new creative challenge as a judge on the BBC’s brand-new series Race Against the Tide.

Bringing her experience across art, fashion and sculpture to the screen, Sadie joins renowned sand sculptor Jamie Wardley on the judging panel, alongside host Iain Stirling.

The six-part series sees teams of professional and amateur sand sculptors race against the incoming tides to create spectacular sculptures on the beaches of St Andrews in Scotland. Together, Sadie and Jamie will be looking for creativity, technical skill, storytelling and that all-important wow factor.

Who is Sadie Clayton?

Sadie Clayton is a multidisciplinary artist and LCCA’s Head of Industry Engagement and Partnerships, with a creative career that’s taken her across fashion, art, sculpture and technology.

After graduating from Kingston University, Sadie first made her name in fashion, becoming known for her sculptural designs and distinctive use of copper. Since then, she’s continued to explore new ways of working, including AI, augmented reality, holograms and robotics.

Her work has been shown at Tate Britain, Tate Modern and the Royal Academy of Arts, and Race Against the Tide isn’t her first time on screen. Sadie has previously appeared on Channel 4’s Hair Power: Me and My Fro, Sky Arts’ Landmark and CBBC’s Britain’s Best Young Artist.

Alongside her own creative practice, Sadie’s role at LCCA is focused on connecting students and the college with the wider creative industries. As Head of Industry Engagement and Partnerships, she works to build relationships and create opportunities that bring students closer to the people and projects shaping their industries. This has led to partnerships with brands including Lazy Oaf, Juicy Couture  and Oh Polly, giving LCCA students the chance to work with them on real creative projects.

She also hosts LCCA’s MAKING IT: Creative Careers Unlocked series, in which she sits down with creatives at the top of their game to talk about their careers, experiences and what they’ve learned along the way.

Sadie’s latest role with the BBC is another chance to see her experience in action and we can’t wait to see what she makes of the competition.

Speaking about her experience on Race Against the Tide, Sadie said:

“I’m thrilled to have taken part in such a wonderful, mood-boosting show – it’s exactly the kind of fun I think everyone needs. My career has always been an exciting mix of innovation and creativity, and from a TV perspective, this has been a real career highlight.

“Bringing together sand, sea, sculpture and my experience as both a creative and an academic has been incredibly rewarding. I hope the show brings people plenty of joy, but also inspires others to think about how multifaceted – and fun – a creative career can be.”

Race Against the Tide airs on BBC Two from 18 August, with all episodes also available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
